Fairmont's community and economic development efforts are what drives Fairmont to be one of Southern Minnesota's best cities for transportation access, land availability, workforce and quality of life. From the mixed agriculture-industrial-based economy, Fairmont has prospered into one of the state's leading rural communities. Adding to the steady growth and stability of the Fairmont economy are several leading industries. Among these are: Fairmont Foods of Minnesota, Weigh-Tronix, Harsco Track Technologies, Hancor, 3M, Cenex Harvest States Inc., Southern Minnesota Construction, Buffalo Lake Energy and REM Heartland.

The City of Fairmont has also situated itself to be a leading regional health care center with the continual growth and expansion of the Fairmont Medical Center and Mayo Health Systems Clinic and Hospital. The City also offers many other medical choices, including four private clinics along with a wide variety of medical support professionals. Fairmont is restructuring its claim as a retail trade center as well. Many national known retailers have moved into the community. Currently, more than 530 businesses are active within the corporate limits of Fairmont. Fairmont is proud of its diverse retail market; its healthy combination of national brand companies and local entrepreneurs.

As far as industrial expansion, the City of Fairmont has a trained workforce, commercial sites, rail access served by two providers, two interstate interchanges and an airport to accommodate jet traffic. Most importantly, Fairmont has a community attitude that says "YES" to innovative positive business growth.
